Tehmi Jahi Chassion brings together experience in healthcare, small business, and public service. A fresh face at the Capitol, he started serving in the Louisiana House in 2024 and has quickly become a thoughtful representative for Lafayette and the surrounding communities.

Background & Education

Tehmi studied microbiology at Louisiana State University, earning his bachelor’s degree before going on to complete a Doctor of Pharmacy at Xavier University of Louisiana. His background in science and healthcare gave him a strong foundation for both his career and the policy work he’s doing today.

Professional Career

Before running for state office, Tehmi built a career in pharmacy, working in Breaux Bridge. Along the way, he also took on projects in construction, roofing, and real estate—fields that helped him stay connected to the day-to-day challenges of working families and local businesses.

Political Career

Tehmi began his journey in public service on the Lafayette Parish School Board, where he was elected three times. He built a reputation for being approachable and engaged, listening closely to parents, teachers, and students. In 2023, he ran for the Louisiana House of Representatives and won the seat for District 44, officially taking office in January 2024.

Committee Roles & Leadership

At the Capitol, Tehmi serves on several key committees, including Health and Welfare, Labor and Industrial Relations, and Transportation, Highways and Public Works. He’s also part of the Acadiana Delegation and plays an active role in both the Democratic Caucus and the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus.

Legislative Focus

Tehmi’s priorities reflect what he knows best—healthcare, education, and community needs. He’s introduced and supported legislation aimed at improving school health standards and expanding access to mental health services. He brings a practical approach to lawmaking, focused on finding solutions that make a real difference for the people he represents.

Personal & Community Life

Tehmi lives in Lafayette Parish and still works as a pharmacist in Breaux Bridge. He stays involved in the community through his work, local events, and church life. Whether he’s behind the pharmacy counter or at the State Capitol, Tehmi leads with the same mindset: listen carefully, work hard, and stay rooted in the community.
