About Rodney Lyons

Rodney is a career servant of Jefferson Parish and its residents. He attended UNO and Delgado, where he studied Business and loved Management and Leadership. Rodney began a 33 year career with Jefferson Parish Public Works where he retired as a Department Head. During those years he not only provided leadership on a professional level, he also excelled in the community as a Youth Coach and Mentor for12 years, where he coached at all levels from the Playgrounds to preparing kids for College, and continues as a Community Leader in the Woodmere Subdivision, serving as the President of the Civic Association for seven years. During that tenure, Rodney worked tirelessly in securing the Woodmere Playground, founding their first Booster Club, and providing the vision for the Community’s first Community Center. To date, he has secured over 4 million dollars for District Projects

His love and commitment for serving inspired him to run for public office after retirement. In 2015, Rodney ran successfully for the Office of State Representative for the 87th House District of Louisiana, located on the westbank of Jefferson Parish. Rodney is in his third term as a Representative and holding true to form, he is working hard for the youth and seniors of Jefferson Parish, donating school uniforms, speaking to kids at school, and even sending them to the State Capitol for a firsthand look at the legislative process. He has inspired the organization of senior groups in his district to better enhance the quality of life for them by authoring and passing legislation providing resources and funding for extended services for health and recreation in Jefferson Parish.

In addition, Rodney continues to fight for the “voiceless” by working across party lines in the Legislature in supporting and authoring Bills to advance Women’s Rights and Domestic Violence, protecting children Rodney authored and passed Act 496 which is groundbreaking in allowing persons with Autism access to medical marijuana for debilitating conditions, services for patients with dementia ad alzemner and supplying vital services to the poor and hardworking people of Louisiana. Rodney has authored legislation to address Louisiana’s Stand Your Ground laws (i.e., the Joe McKnight Bill) and House Bill 839, which would have created a Minority Judgeship in Jefferson Parish Juvenile Court and an additional minority Judge in the 5th District Court of Appeals. Representative Lyons currently serves as the Vice Chair of the House and Governmental Committee and has been elected as the Vice Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus.

He continues to recognize now, what he has always recognized, that everything should always be about the people
