Joy Walters

Joy Walters represents District 4 in the Louisiana House of Representatives. She took office in January 2024 after winning the 2023 election.

Background and Education

Joy is from Shreveport, Louisiana. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy from Wiley College, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Master of Theology from Emory University. She also completed a certificate from Yale University’s Women’s Campaign School.

Professional Career

Before being elected, Joy worked as an aide in the Louisiana State Senate and for former U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu. These roles gave her valuable experience in government and public service.

Political Career

Joy first ran for office in 2019 but did not win. She ran again in 2023 and was elected to represent District 4.

Committee Roles and Leadership

In the House, she serves on the Administration of Criminal Justice, Labor and Industrial Relations, Transportation, Highways and Public Works, and the House Select Committee on Women and Children. She is a member of the Democratic Caucus, Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, and Louisiana Legislative Women’s Caucus.
