C. Travis Johnson
State Representative
Alonzo Knox represents District 93 in the Louisiana House of Representatives, covering parts of New Orleans. He stepped into the role in March 2023, bringing with him a strong background in public service, business, and community advocacy.
Background and Education
Alonzo grew up in Baton Rouge and graduated from Glen Oaks High School. He earned a degree in political science and law enforcement from Southern University and later completed an MBA at Trinity Washington University. He also served in the United States Marine Corps from 1989 to 2006, reaching the rank of Sergeant. That experience shaped much of his leadership style and commitment to public service.
Professional Career
After leaving the military, Alonzo worked with the Department of Veterans Affairs and went on to co-found Backatown Coffee Parlour in New Orleans. The café quickly became more than just a coffee shop—it was a hub for community gathering, local culture, and youth employment. Through his business and civic work, he’s been active in preserving the spirit and heritage of the city.
Political Career
Alonzo entered the political scene with a City Council run in 2021. In 2023, he won a special election to replace Royce Duplessis in the State House and was re-elected later that year without opposition. His work is deeply focused on lifting up neighborhoods and addressing the concerns of everyday residents.
Committee Roles and Leadership
In the legislature, Alonzo serves on several key committees, including criminal justice, commerce, municipal affairs, homeland security, and veterans affairs. He’s active in the Democratic Caucus, the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, and the Orleans Delegation. He also advocates for education and workforce development, especially in STEM.
Legislative Focus
Alonzo’s priorities include support for veterans, community safety, access to mental health services, and rebuilding neighborhoods through small business and cultural investment. He’s also working on improving forensic and crime lab capacity in New Orleans and pushing for stronger outreach on mental health.
Personal and Community Life
Alonzo lives in Tremé with his wife Jessica. Together, they continue to run Backatown Coffee Parlour and have launched other community-centered projects, including a cultural marketplace. He remains involved with veteran outreach, his fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi, neighborhood groups, and his church. His day-to-day work is grounded in showing up for people and solving real problems in his district.
